Why this work, in this place

Wyndham is growing faster than anywhere else in Australia

And the benefits of that growth aren’t reaching everyone equally.

500,000
Wyndham's population by 2040. Nearly half of residents were born overseas, most are under 35, and the community represents more than 162 countries.
60%
of residents commute out of Wyndham for work every day (ABS, 2021). Local jobs give people back hours of their week.
14.5%
youth unemployment in Western Melbourne: 60% higher than the national average. Young people from culturally diverse backgrounds face additional barriers.
$120M
estimated annual cost of youth disengagement across Wyndham: $37,900 per young person in lost productivity and social services.

Inclusive employment practices generate an estimated $12.7 billion in economic benefit annually across Australia (Deloitte, 2019).

Case studies

Two ways this plays out on the ground

Employer

Planting seeds for sustainable employment

Opportunity. All Green Nursery and Garden Supplies is a long-standing family business with deep roots in Wyndham. Finding skilled, motivated people who share their values of sustainability, growth and community is vital to how they operate.

Solution. Working with The Gordon Skills and Jobs Centre and Wyndham City Council, All Green welcomed three participants for a six-month employment journey and the chance to earn a Certificate in Horticulture.

Impact. The training turned into long-term employment: one participant is now a supervisor, another has taken a leadership role. All Green now recommends Opportunity Wyndham to other local businesses.

Young people

Creating pathways and hope at Manor Lakes

Opportunity. In 2024 the Manor Lakes Community Centre and Library became a hub for young people during and after school hours, more than the centre could support safely.

Solution. Council placed trained youth workers on site, who found young people reporting hopelessness about their future and little knowledge of education and employment pathways. Opportunity Wyndham built a pilot around them: career guidance, resume workshops, one-on-one support, Industry Insights sessions and a youth-focused expo.

Impact. By pooling partner resources, a local flashpoint is being turned into a pipeline into training and work.

The next twelve months

A priority commitment to young people

In 2025 Opportunity Wyndham adopted a strategic focus on people aged 15 to 25, responding to high youth disengagement and Wyndham’s young demographic, while continuing work across the wider community.

A service mapping exercise is underway to define every youth pathway currently available in Wyndham, so providers can refer accurately. Existing programs are pivoting to a youth focus: paid work experience, workplace immersion and volunteering, alongside new Youth Careers Expos, industry engagement sessions and youth working groups.

The partnership is actively seeking champion employers to help generate real local opportunities for these young people.
